(1) We fully disagree with wings clipping, whatever the reason. Imagine someone cut your arms at the elbows level, just to prevent you from doing wrong (or dangerous things) with your hands. (2) The "freedom-at-home" theme should be more refined. We live in a very large city house. My son's bedroom is quite large and has little furniture. Hence, the dangers for a bird are minimal. We installed the 'tiels (hand-raised and fully tamed) in that room with two large cages. Their tree (see photos at http://www.geocities.com/cockatiel88/page2ukst ruct1-1.htm sits also in that room. Whenever my son, 13, is in his room (apart from to sleep) the two tiels are in full freedom but under permanent watch, just in case. We never had any problem. When a bird comes to you missing most of its feathers, toenails so long it can hardly perch, screaming incessantly for some attention, the only way that bird is going to get better and be happy is when it's human(s) follow a creed such as this. (1) We fully disagree with wings clipping, whatever the reason. Imagine someone cut your arms at the elbows level, just to prevent you from doing wrong (or dangerous things) with your hands. (2) The "freedom-at-home" theme should be more refined. We live in a very large city house. My son's bedroom is quite large and has little furniture. Hence, the dangers for a bird are minimal. We installed the 'tiels (hand-raised and fully tamed) in that room with two large cages. Their tree (see photos at http://www.geocities.com/cockatiel88/page2ukst ruct1-1.htm sits also in that room. Whenever my son, 13, is in his room (apart from to sleep) the two tiels are in full freedom but under permanent watch, just in case. We never had any problem. They fly in a volume they know very well and feel safe there.
